To anyone vaguely interested in cricket, you would have heard of Jonathan Agnew. Better known as Aggers, he is a former England Test cricketer and the current voice of the legendary BBC Test Match Special (TMS).
If you’re on Twitter, I would highly recommend following him. From a cricketing point a view, he is first class. He gives great insight into the game from both his personal experience and his journalistic work with the BBC. Also as a proud Yorkshireman, you get an understanding of what it’s like working with the Sir Geoffrey Boycott. A very witty and prolific tweeter, Agnew has over 200,000 followers.
Yesterday evening he announced on Twitter that he was launching his own website. He mentioned that there would be lots of TMS archive and there is information and pictures of him at work. As you can imagine, the moment he made the announcement, many of his follower on the commute home attempted to access the site. Unfortunately for him and the website designers, the new site could not handle the spike in load and it was down until Thursday lunchtime.
His initial tweet was retweeted eight times. Of that eight, included ex cricketer and Question of Sport captain Phil Tufnell. Tufnell himself has over 200,000 followers, and these added retweets advertised the new site to a wider audience. I am not suggesting that nearly 500,000 tried to access it at the same time, but this rapid spread of information means the website was advertised to a huge potential audience.
When finishing this article, the site appeared online and looks great. However I am confident that with a quick performance test, it would have been possible to find out where its breaking point would be. This is another example of how a simple performance test could help your website from being bowled out (terrible cricket pun I know!). To finish I will leave you this gem…the greatest bit of sporting commentary ever!
